Advanced pH measurement and control: digital twin synergy and advances in technology, fourth edition
McMillan, Gregory K.; Stuart, Christopher; Cook, Dean; Sample, Zachary
International Society of Automation
, 2024
; English
; 470 Pages
The extraordinary sensitivity and rangeability of pH used for measuring and controlling hydrogen concentration introduce many difficulties in addressing the exceptional consequential nonlinearity in the control loop and precision requirements of the control valve. This, combined with the critical role of pH for the health of cells in biological processes, clean water, and the production of foods, pharmaceuticals, and many chemicals, translates into the best pH control system being particularly critical and challenging. This book provides knowledge of key principles and advances in electrode technology and diagnostics; a largely unrealized, simple method of computing titration curves that match laboratory curves; and the selection and implementation of the best control valves and control strategies. Despite the many challenges, the results can be a significant reduction in equipment cost and, more importantly, a remarkable improvement in system reliability and performance. System design, installation, maintenance, and continuous improvement are explained in detail, with emphasis on the roles the digital twin and first principle charge balance play in increasing innovation, operability, productivity, reliability, and maintainability. Finally, the appendices discuss the essential fundamentals of first principles and provide guidance on using new PID features that enable greater achievements in minimizing project costs and maximizing process efficiency, capacity, and safety

CoE : the key to data-driven manufacturing
Vokey, Grant
International Society of Automation
, 2023
; English
; 211 Pages
In recent years, there has been a lot of talk in the manufacturing industry about digital transformation and data-driven manufacturing. But many companies struggle with how to implement data-driven manufacturing and how to achieve digital transformation. Many companies have implemented a team that supports a digital transformation called a Center of Excellence or CoE. But what are they achieving excellence at?
In his first book, MES: An Operations Management Approach (co-authored with Thomas Seubert), Vokey discussed using MES to support data-driven manufacturing as part of a company’s digital transformation. In COE: The Key to Data-Driven Manufacturing, Vokey discusses the characteristics of manufacturing that make data-driven manufacturing the right management decision. He discusses building a CoE, developing the skills needed to achieve digital transformation, and taking the transformation beyond the manufacturing floor.

Process control is essential in modern manufacturing. The control system is the eyes, ears, and nervous system of the plant. It senses, decides, and directs the activities of the pumps, valves, motors, and other equipment. The control system handles many routine tasks, freeing up the operator to oversee the operation and handle new situations that arise. Without process control, it would be nearly impossible to efficiently produce commodities like pulp and paper, gasoline, plastic, and pharmaceuticals. Most people learn process control through hands-on plant experience, accompanied by a healthy dose of self-study. This is because textbooks generally address the mathematics of process dynamics and control, but often miss the practical aspects. This easy-to-read book fills the gap by focusing on practical real-world knowledge of process control systems, providing clear and concise examples, and providing practical advice for handling day-to-day maintenance and documentation. The author begins by discussing control terminology, principles, and applications, the information one needs to form a basic understanding of process control. He then explains the differences between discrete, continuous, and batch control, as well as the different control systems, programming languages, and documentation needed for each. To complete the foundation, the author addresses the management of control systems including discussions about maintenance, change management, communications, and documentation. Finally, one chapter introduces advanced control topics such as advanced regulatory control, multivariable control, and neural networks. Whether you are a student of process control, a technician or engineer expanding their skills, or someone in operations, maintenance, sales, support, or management who wants to develop a basic understanding of process control, this book is for you.
