; English
; 274 Pages
Polyurethanes represent a class of highly versatile commercial polymers extensively utilized across various applications. Their diverse forms, such as foams, elastomers, coatings, and adhesives, are prized for their material flexibility and synthesis adaptability. Traditionally, polyurethanes are synthesized using polyols and isocyanates, often derived from petrochemical sources or materials with environmental and health implications.
In response to growing environmental concerns and the need for safer alternatives, nonisocyanate-based polyurethanes (NIPUs) have emerged as a promising avenue of research. These materials offer the potential to mitigate the drawbacks associated with traditional isocyanate-based polyurethanes. This book explores the fundamental chemistry, synthesis methods, properties, and diverse applications of NIPUs.
“Non-Isocyanate Polyurethanes: Chemistry, Progress, and Challenges” addresses a critical gap in the existing literature by consolidating current knowledge on NIPUs under one comprehensive volume. This book encompasses 12 chapters that delve into the historical development, basic chemistry, synthesis techniques, characteristics, and wide-ranging applications of polyurethanes. It also explores environmental and health considerations associated with conventional polyurethanes and the comparative advantages of NIPUs.
Key topics covered include polycondensation, polyaddition reactions, rearrangement, and ring-opening polymerization reactions for NIPU synthesis. Additionally, the role of bio-based materials in NIPU synthesis, as well as the properties and performance of NIPUs in elastomers, coatings, adhesives, and foams, are extensively discussed.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the reviewers for their insightful comments and recommendations, which have significantly enhanced the quality of this book. Special thanks are due to the ACS Books editorial team for their expert handling and timely responses throughout the process.
This book is dedicated to our family, teachers, and students, whose unwavering support and inspiration have been instrumental in my journey and achievements.

, 2025
; English
; 343 Pages
Enzymes are the highly efficient nature’s catalysts that are specific, selective, with rapid turnover rate. They can mediate a variety of complex reactions and have applications in food, agriculture, textile, detergent, environment, paper, biofuel, pharmaceutical, etc. Their implementation in diverse sectors are made feasible by immobilizing them on a suitable carrier to enhance the shelf live and reusability of enzymes. There are various methods of enzyme immobilization, and each method has its own strengths and weaknesses. The immobilization of an enzyme impacts its kinetic parameters and limits its mobility compared to the free enzyme. The purpose of immobilization is to augment the biocatalytic activity, reduce the limiting effect of other parameters viz temperature, pH, solvents, etc. and increase the space-time yield of the overall process. To date, a plethora of immobilization carrier have been documented and nanomaterials have emerged as a prime choice due to their excellent qualities. The nanomaterials have high surface area to volume ratio, which favors sufficient immobilization of enzyme to achieve optimum activity. They are widely used in semi-conductors, cosmetics, paints, medicine, drug delivery, biosensors, and more. Primarily, they are classified into organic and inorganic nanomaterials. The organic nanomaterials encompass micelles, liposomes, dendrimers, carbon-derived nanomaterials. The inorganic nanomaterials include metal, silica, etc. Lately, the hybrids of organic and inorganic nanomaterials have also been used for enzyme immobilization. This chapter discusses the different methods of immobilization; carbon and metal-based nanomaterials; applications; and challenges of nanomaterial immobilized enzymes.

Corrosion poses a significant challenge due to its detrimental effects on both the economy and the environment. To effectively address this issue, Metal−Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a novel and promising class of compounds. MOFs can function as fillers, corrosion inhibitors, thin films, and nanocarriers across various systems, owing to their large specific surface area (SSA), corrosion inhibitory properties, and pH-sensitive structure. Researchers have increasingly focused on the MOFs for corrosion control because of these notable characteristics. The synthesis method, whether hydrothermal/solvothermal, sedimentary, microwave-assisted, or sonochemical, can significantly influence the ultimate properties of MOFs. Advanced MOFs represent an innovative approach to corrosion management, with mixed metal and mixed ligand frameworks enhancing the stability, inhibitory properties, and structural integrity of MOFs. This chapter explores the synthesis methods, characteristics, and corrosion applications of MOFs, highlighting their potential to revolutionize corrosion control technologies.
