Nonlinear optimal and flatness-based control methods and applications for complex dynamical systems
Rigatos, Gerasimos; Abbaszadeh, Masoud; Siano, Pierluigi
The Institution of Engineering and Technology
, 2025
; English
; 894 Pages
Robotics, mechatronics and autonomous systems can exhibit complex nonlinear dynamics which can lead to unsatisfactory transients and deviation from setpoints or even to instability.
A standard approach in the control of these systems had been the concept of diffeomorphisms to bring a system into a linear form.
However, these methods are not straightforward and result in complicated state-space model transformations.
In this monograph, new methods have been investigated which are not constrained by the shortcomings of global linearization-based control schemes.
They can be implemented in a computationally simple manner, are followed by global stability proofs, and perform better than previous optimal control approaches for a wider class of nonlinear dynamical systems and applications. In this monograph, the authors present two main proven control methods: the nonlinear optimal (H-infinity) control method, and the flatness-based control approach.
These methods have shown to be better suited than previous standard approaches in solving control issues, and can be used in a wide class of dynamical systems.
They can have a broad range of applications in mechatronics, industrial robotics, space robotics, robotic cranes and pendulums, autonomous vehicles, aerospace systems and satellites, power electronics, biosystems and financial systems. This very comprehensive monograph is a valuable resource for academic researchers and engineers working on control systems and estimation methods, and university staff and graduate students in the fields of control and automation, robotics and mechatronics, electrical engineering, electric power systems and power electronics, biosystems, computer science, financial systems, and physics.
The monograph is also a very useful reference for skilled technical professionals developing real world applications.

The built environment, encompassing the spaces we inhabit, the infrastructure that connects us, and the systems that sustain our societies, is foundational to human progress.
It shapes how we live, work and interact, serving as a fundamental for social and economic prosperity.
Yet, despite its importance, the sector faces enduring challenges: inefficiencies, insufficient collaboration, significant environmental impact, and a slow pace of transformative innovation, particularly in areas such as value creation, business model evolution, and major sector-wide transformations. Digitalisation and digital transformation, driven by technologies such as building information modelling (BIM), the internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and immersive technologies, have become essential in helping the sector address these issues.
More recently, distributed ledger technologies (DLT), such as blockchain and self-executing contracts like smart contracts, have emerged, offering further opportunities for the built environment. Emerging evidence, as explored in this book, highlights DLT's capabilities in transparency and trust (immutable records and enhanced accountability), efficiency and automation (smart contracts and streamlined processes), data security (decentralised integrity), collaborative governance (shared decision-making), tokenisation (democratised ownership), integration (synergy with digital twins, BIM and IoT), and sustainability (circular economies, renewable energy).
However, adoption in the built environment faces several challenges, including legal, technical, ethical and stakeholder barriers. Combining theoretical and practical perspectives, this book examines the potential of blockchain and DLT in both the delivery and management of the built environment, addressing their adoption frameworks, applications and associated benefits and challenges. Intended for researchers, practitioners, students, technology developers and policymakers, Blockchain, Smart Contracts and Distributed Ledger Technologies in the Built Environment: Key concepts, technologies, and applications is a comprehensive guide to the adoption and integration of DLT in the built environment.

Smart cities for inclusive innovation : concepts, technologies and solutions
Lazaroiu, George Cristian; Roscia, Mariacristina; Dancu, Vasile Sebastian
The Institution of Engineering and Technology
, 2025
; English
; 320 Pages
Cities that promote inclusion not only ensure greater opportunities for their citizens but often reap large economic benefits. In recent years, smart cities have exploited and used technologies to guarantee a better quality of services and to predictively analyse and provide responses to urban changes in a proactive way. However, it has become clear that some initiatives have made existing inequalities stronger by failing to address the needs of all citizens. Today, more than ever, it is necessary to address inclusiveness in smart cities from the ground up. Sustainable solutions and energy efficient methods have led to cleaner energy, pollution reduction, improvements in the life of citizens, and transformed environments and regulatory structures to be more inclusive. This is creating smarter cities where citizens, inclusivity and sustainability are at the core.
Designing a new smart city is much simpler than incorporating new technologies into an already built urban space. This book covers technology advances, innovative concepts, solutions and applications in smart cities, both from engineering and social perspectives.
Smart Cities for Inclusive Innovation: Concepts, technologies and solutions is a useful resource for researchers and engineers in smart cities and their associated technologies as well as specialists such as planners, decision-makers and stakeholders in urban communities and local governments, and administrators involved in current and impending smart cities-related activities.

Energy optimization and security in federated learning for IoT environments
Balusamy, Balamurugan; Arockiam, Daniel; Raj, Pethuru
The Institution of Engineering and Technology
, 2025
; English
; 349 Pages
Smart environments such as smart homes and industrial automation have been transformed by the rapid developments in internet of things (IoT) devices and systems. However, the widespread use of these devices poses significant difficulties, particularly in settings with limited energy resources. Due to the significant energy consumption and communication overhead associated with delivering huge amounts of data, traditional machine learning algorithms which rely on centralized cloud servers for training are not always suitable.
Federated learning is a decentralized strategy that enables collaborative machine learning model training while keeping the data local on edge devices. It has emerged as a suitable solution to overcome the energy constraints of IoT devices. Federated learning works by dividing the training process among several nodes and using the processing power of edge devices. As opposed to sending raw data to a central server, only the model changes are communicated thereby considerably lowering the communication costs while protecting data privacy. This strategy reduces energy usage while simultaneously reducing network latency and bandwidth-related problems.
In this book, the authors show how to optimise federated learning algorithms and develop new communication protocols and resource allocation methodologies to maximize energy savings while retaining respectable model accuracy, to develop long-lasting and scalable IoT solutions that can function independently with no dependency on an external cloud infrastructure.
Energy Optimization and Security in Federated Learning for IoT Environments is intended to be a useful resource for academic researchers, R&D professionals, IoT engineers in the IT industry, and data scientists creating optimised AI models to be run in cloud environments.
